Understanding the Purpose of URL Extensions

Not many people pay attention to a website address. As long as they are able to access the page they wanted, then they could care less. Without a doubt, there have been instances wherein users have keyed in the wrong address and what comes out on screen is Error 404. Some people would disregard this case as a matter of the site not yet existing or wrong spelling. However, another case is that the address is incorrect to begin with.

Aside from checking the spelling, it is also important to determine whether the Uniform Resource Locators (URL's) are incorrect or not. There are generally two kinds, namely generic and country code. The latter is applicable to location specific sites. For instance, those ending with .co.uk are usually developed in the United Kingdom. Common examples for generic include .com, .gov., and .edu.

You might be wondering what the last portion of the address is for and why there are different kinds. Take note, not all websites have the same content and purpose. There are those solely for educational, informational, and commercial purposes. In a way, they are similar to finger prints. Keep in mind that all sites are categorised according to their content, and these last two or three characters help search engines determine the classification of these pages.

Knowing these different tail-ends of a URL can also help you find sites even if you do not know the complete address. You simply type in a certain keyword and include the extension. This helps you narrow down your search for specific pages.

This will also help users determine the specific purpose of a site. For instance, if a company decides to simply present information regarding products and services, their site can either end with .com or .info.
